Kerala Wild Life
The forest area in Kerala cover an area of approximately ten thousand square kilometers. Most of the forest in Kerala are tropical rain forest. In these forests there are plenty of flora and fauna. The tropical rain forests of Kerala are one of most bio diverse regions in India and there are many places to see Kerala wild life .
Wild life and tourism
There are many tourists who come to see Kerala wild life. Some of the important tourist spots for seeing wildlife in Kerala are listed below.
Eravikulam national Park : This national park is situated very close to Munnar town. Nilgiri Tahr, a rare and endangered species can be seen here. Here it is also possible to see the highest peak in South India.
Periyar National Park : This park is situated in Thekkady. Here tourists can see plenty of wild life by travelling in a boat along the lake in Thekkady. The common animals that can be seen here are elephants, wild buffalo, deer, wild boar, wild langur etc.
Chinnar Wild life sanctuary is situated aproximately 50 km from Munnar along the Munnar – Udumalpet road. Many tourists who love trekking in the forest come to this sanctuary. Trekking through the forests can take you to Thoovanam water falls deep inside the forest. There are tree houses inside Chinnar sanctuary. It is possible to see dolmen built during pre-historic times.
Idukki wildlife sanctuary : is another wild life sanctuary in Idukki district. It is close to Idukki arch dam. This place is approximately 120 km from Cochin airport. This is also a tropical evergreen forest. The most common wild animals are elephants, deer, macaque, deers, langurs, porcupine, wild boars, jackals etc.
Peechi- Vazhani wild life sanctuary : is situated in Thrissur district of Kerala. This wild life sanctuary is situated between Peechi and Vazhani dams. This place is ideal for trekking with permission form the forest authorities. Bison, deer and elephants are seen here. Predators like tiger, leopard are also found in this sanctuary.
Silent Valley National Park : is situated in Palakkad district of Kerala. It is part of Nilgiri bio reserve. The common wild animals found in the park are elephants, lion tailed macaques, wild langurs. Entry to the park is possible only after taking permission from forest officials by paying an entry fee.
Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary : This bird sanctuary is located in border between Ernakulam and Idukki districts of Kerala about 12km from Kothamangalam town. This is ideal place for bird watching. During winter season in the North, migratory birds come to this place.
